Stuff (An Excerpt)

By: Sarah Knight

My faith in stuff might be too much. I’m Stuff-fearing, afraid that the universes these items contain will weigh me down. I hear Erykah Badu warning me that I’m going to miss my bus: “You can't hurry up / 'cause you got too much stuff!”

That’s why I’m keen on throwing it away. There’s stress that accompanies collecting things that would be lovely to sink in resin or press between sheets of notebook paper. Stuff is noisy. It demands consideration and contemplation, and I’m bad at saying no. So I throw it away in hopes it will die, or at least go bother someone else.

Sometimes I regret it, particularly with those weak attempts at diaries from elementary school, or all of the photo booth strips I swear I had multiples of. My grandmother’s lime jello salad recipe collection - four strong - some calling for marshmallows, some not. The shirt that would have gone perfectly with the pants that I have on. Mostly I miss the stuff that I suspect could take me back to someplace I miss. Of course, the pain of missing accounts for the discarding in the first place.

Someone once told me that if I study for my test with the same pencil that I use to take the test, I will ace said test. I can see a world in which a particularly distinctive writing utensil unlocks the part of your brain where you stash French verbs and differential equations. The mechanical pencil with the red clip can take-you-there. Stuff can take-you-there.

Maybe I should be less precious with my stuff. Or more. Both, I guess.
