On Becoming (An Excerpt)

By: Sydnie Hyams

Blinking, your eyelashes brush the browning grass below. Is it colder now? Does the grass smell of gasoline? 01101110 01101111—The grass smells of burning static—Why is the ground, planted in, blinking too? Snow on the TV veils the veins of the dirt. Electric electricity programing: are you supposed to see? Are you supposed to buzz as well? Feeling relief for the first time since becoming here you resign to the noise: your mouth opens, tongue protruding, to scrape the computations. Your spit and the stream of 1s and 0s orchestrate bells and silvers and hums made of familiarity.

Hmmm…

Heavier now: trying to press the whole of your tongue in precious agony against The Machine, the hum permeates you. Blankets and soaks from the inside out, slathering you in The Deal.

Aftertaste of oil and burnt florals: It feels good to be wanted, to be held—The Machine asks you questions and wants to know:

No one has ever asked you these before. The Machine: Eyes on you, asking you, believing you like god or man or buffalo. Maybe here you can be all? Can you be re-wired to understand if this is normal? You are dropping the language to describe, so you may hold the electrics, so you may become god or man or buffalo. If The Machine already treats you as such do you need to become? Can you even become while entangled in Deal?
